GOODYEAR, Ariz. —Homer Bailey’s first spring training start helped his bid for a spot in Cincinnati’s rotation.
The former first-round draft pick allowed only an infield single over two innings during the Reds’ 7-6 victory against the White Sox on Wednesday. Bailey is one of at least three pitchers competing for the last two slots in the rotation behind Edinson Volquez, Bronson Arroyo and Johnny Cueto.
Shoulder inflammation cost Bailey a couple of months last season. He’s eager to show that he’s healthy and worthy of keeping a job.
Chicago also got a solid performance from its starter, Edwin Jackson, who yielded 2 walks in 2 scoreless innings. Jackson threw a no-hitter for Arizona on June 25, but later struggled and was traded to the White Sox after putting up a 5.16 ERA and 6-10 record.
Jackson filled Jake Peavy’s spot in the rotation after the former ace underwent season-ending surgery. Jackson allowed only three runs in his first four starts for Chicago and went 4-2 with a 3.24 ERA.
“I’m in a different role now,” he said. “In previous years, I had to fight for a position. Now I can throw strikes and get back into the groove of things.”
White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen was happy with the performance.
“He threw strikes and that’s the main thing,” Guillen said.,BASEBALLCubs’ Silva blows up in dugout
MARYVALE, Ariz.—The Cubs are blowing up on and off the field. Literally.
After another error-filled start to their Spring Training game Wednesday, things blew up in the dugout when a few players scuffled, including starting pitcher Carlos Silva.
The Cubs made three errors behind Silva in the first inning and fell behind 6-0 vs. the Milwaukee Brewers, who went on to win 12-5. Aramis Ramirez, Starlin Castro and Koyie Hill were each guilty of errors. When the players returned to the dugout, Ramirez and Silva scuffled, and the fight had to be broken up by other players and coaches.
After the altercation, Silva left the dugout with the strength coach Tim Buss, but he was still jawing at someone as he left. Silva was whisked past the media on a cart and left the ballpark without comment.
While Ramirez denied any involvement, Alfonso Soriano told reporters that Ramirez and Silva were the combatants. “They have to talk together and be normal,” Soriano said. “I hope they talk.”
The Cubs had nine errors in three games coming into Wednesday’s game.,NBAAtlanta rallies to beat Bulls
ATLANTA — Al Horford matched his career high with 31 points, including a jam with 29 seconds remaining to give Atlanta its first lead, and the Hawks beat the Bulls 83-80 on Wednesday night.
The Bulls scored the first 14 points of the game, took a 19-point lead in the second quarter and kept the lead until the final minute.
Horford had 16 rebounds and two steals, including one after his go-ahead basket that set up a jam by Joe Johnson for the final margin.
Luol Deng had 15 points, Joakim Noah had 13 points and 12 rebounds and Derrick Rose had 12 points and 12 assists for Chicago.
The Hawks, who were without injured forward Josh Smith, have six straight home wins in the series with the Bulls.
The Hawks cut Chicago’s lead to one point at 79-78 on a 3-pointer by Marvin Williams(notes) with 1:18 remaining.
Atlanta finally pulled even at 79-all when Horford made one of two free throws with 56 seconds remaining. Noah pushed Chicago’s lead back to one point by making one of two free throws with 37 seconds remaining.
Following a timeout, Jamal Crawford(notes) drove toward the basket and passed to Horford, whose jam gave Atlanta its first lead at 81-80.
Chicago’s Kyle Korver(notes) missed a 3-pointer at the final buzzer.,NHLToews’ two goals lift Hawks
CHICAGO — Jonathan Toews scored two goals and the Blackhawks held off the Calgary Flames 6-4 on Wednesday night to extend their winning streak to a season-high six games.
Brian Campbell, Michael Frolik, Dave Bolland and Marian Hossa also scored for surging defending Stanley Cup champion Chicago, 8-1-2 in its last 11.
Rene Bourque scored twice and Jarome Iginla connected once in the third period for the Flames, who fell short in trying to come back from a 4-1 deficit. Alex Tanguay added a goal and an assist for Calgary, which lost in regulation for only the second time in its last eight games.
Calgary is 13-3-3 in its last 19. Like the Blackhawks, the Flames have climbed back into playoff contention in the congested Western Conference standings.,COLLEGE BASKETBALLNorthwestern dumps Minnesota
EVANSTON — Michael Thompson and sophomore reserve Alex Marcotullio scored 18 points apiece as Northwestern rallied from a 10-point second-half deficit for a 68-57 victory over Minnesota on Wednesday night.

Rutgers 68, DePaul 64
ROSEMONT — Jonathan Mitchell scored 18 points as Rutgers was able to hold off DePaul.
Rutgers (14-15, 5-12 Big East) led 63-57 after Gilvydas Biruta’s dunk with 1:43 left, but Brandon Young made a pair of free throws and Moses Morgan had a 3-point play to get DePaul within 63-62 with 31.1 seconds left.,BASEBALL
