The body of Margaret Mary O'Toole, 69, was found in the loungeroom of her Serrell Street,East Malvern, home by her brother yesterday afternoon.

Her brother had gone to the flat, where she had lived for five years, because he hadnot been able to make contact with her.

The front door was unlocked and the home had been ransacked.

Homicide detectives and members of the Force Response Unit today conducted a searchof the area around Mrs O'Toole's flat in a bid to find any clues to the attack.

It followed a police door-knock of neighbours late yesterday.

He said she had not been seen since the Easter holidays and had probably been deadfor a few days.

"This is a particularly brutal attack," he said.

"We are appealing to the public to help trace the last movements of the deceased."
